An annual research fellowship to conduct research at Montana Historical Society (MTHS), Montana State University (MSU) and/or University of Montana (UM) library and archives. Up to two fellowships will be awarded with a stipend of $2,000.
Fellowship expectations and deliverables
- Expected to be in residence and conduct research for a total of two weeks between May 1 and October 31 in at least two of the three History Network institutions
- Submit a written report about the research experience, by December 31, which will be shared with the donor funding the fellowship, Mr. Nelson Weller
- Schedule a meeting with editorial staff of Montana the Magazine of Western History to discuss potential article submission
Award Criteria
- Applicants must be enrolled in a master’s or doctoral program in history or a related field at a Montana University
- Suitability of the research topic to MTHS, MSU and/or UM library and archives collections
- Potential of the project to make a significant contribution to scholarship about Montana
- Potential of the project to produce an article-length publication

- Project proposal, not to exceed 3 double-spaced pages, including specific materials the applicant intends to consult at each library or archive
- 2-3 page CV
- Letter of recommendation
