Montana and the Great War

April 6, 2017, marks the hundredth anniversary of America’s entry into World War I. The Montana Historical Society has created this website to recognize this significant centennial—and to investigate the war’s transformative and complicated legacy in our home state. Resources gathered here include the following:
  • Story Maps: interactive maps featuring images and events from across the state, exploring different ways the war—and its aftermath—affected Montanans.
  • Books and Articles: a list of published works that explore Montana during World War I—including links to full text of many of those resources.
  • Voices: short oral history clips featuring Montanans’ memories of life during World War I—overseas and at home.
  • Archival Material: information about some of the relevant archival collections at the Montana Historical Society.
  • Digitized Newspapers: Explore our digitized newspaper collections to learn how the Montana press reported on the war.
  • Online Exhibit: Explore a digital version of Montana Museum’s exhibit Times of Trouble, Times of Change: Montana and the Great War
  • Presentations: Watch or listen to presentations given at the historical society about Montana during the WWI era.
  • County Projects: Montana high school students have conducted original research to highlight the effects of the war on their counties. Learn what they've found.
  • Educators: Ideas and lesson plans for teaching Montana and the Great War.
  • About the Project: Background and project staff
