Montana The Magazine of Western History Online Index User Guide

The numbers following the alphabetized entries are deciphered as follows:

  • the volume number first;
  • the issue number next, in parentheses;
  • the page number last. The letter "n" following a page number denotes that the listing refers to a footnote on that page.

For examples, references to Crow Agency -- 46(2)56 -- can be found in volume 46, number 2, page 56.

The volume/number coding for Montana is quite simple. To convert a volume/number citation to is more friendly year/issue reference, add the number "1950" to the volume number to produce the year, i.e., 46+1950=1996.
