This unit provides an historical account of the “Landless Indians” from time immemorial to the present day. Using primary sources and supported by the Essential Understandings, the lessons are designed to incorporate classroom discussion, individual learning, and supported reading/viewing. Created by former classroom teacher Anna East and Montana current poet laureate and Little Shell tribal member Chris La Tray for the Indian Education Division of the Montana Office of Public Instruction, the material is designed for use in grades six-eight. Most of the lessons include primary sources and extension activities. The unit can be taught in its entirety, but each lesson can also be taught independently.
